Restaurant Wars is one of Top Chef‘s signature challenges. It’s been known to topple great chef-testants, but this year’s casualty was especially shocking. No one expected Kristen Kish, the young sous chef from Michigan, to pack her knives and go so early. As the leader of the losing restaurant theme Atelier Kwan, she was the most vulnerable, but you’d think her past wins and status as front-runner to win the whole thing would put her through over Josie Smith-Malave, who’s been skating by for weeks. EW checked in with Kish to talk about her surprising elimination and what she’s planning for the future.

Restaurant Wars, the most anticipated episode of the Top Chef season, is upon us. It’s boys against girls, Filipino against French, three against four and 48 hours to turn an empty space into a real live restaurant.
Kristen Kish heads up the women’s team of Brooke, Lizzie and why-the-hell-is-she-still-here Josie. Let’s not beat around the bush. We all know KK has talent. She can cook. She creates an ambitious menu of riffs on a charcuterie course, bouillabaisse, beef bourguignon, a cheese course and a French macaron.

When we left off in episode 4, she had just won 10 grand for frying onion rings and making mushrooms, but she’s had a lot more to show off since then. Did I mention she’s gorgeous too? Okay, that’s besides the point cuz she sure can cook!

Boston’s Kristen Kish is killing it on ‘Top Chef’

“Top Chef” is paying off for Boston-based chef Kristen Kish, and it’s still only the middle of the tenth season of the Bravo cooking competition, which is set in Seattle this round.
Kish, 28, is currently chef de cuisine at Stir, a Barbara Lynch eatery and cooking school in Boston. After last week’s episode, she has three elimination wins under her belt. Those wins have netted her $35,000 to date. (A new episode of Bravo’s Top Chef’ airs tonight at 10 p.m.)

In New York City’s East Village, Christina Ha’s candied bacon and maple macarons are enjoying something of a cult following. As head baker at Macaron Parlour, a patisserie that she co-owns with husband Simon Tung, Ha is bringing bold American flavors and unique twists to the classic French cookies.
Typically composed of two almond meringue shells coating a tasty buttercream or ganache, macarons (not to be mistaken with macaroons) are colorful, bite-sized cookies that have only recently become popular in the States.

Nine episodes into the current season of Bravo’s battling-chef reality show, the cook from Kentwood is easily the frontrunner among the remaining contestants. She has won three Elimination Challenges, with her victor’s spoils totaling $35,000, plus a Healthy Choice frozen entrée based on her winning pot pie recipe. The judges often lavish praise on her work, and fans of the show have buried her with compliments and accolades.

For Hines Ward, the route to a post-football career has taken some pretty diverse turns.
Already a “Dancing With the Stars” champion, Mr. Ward has filled the months since his retirement from the Pittsburgh Steelers in March with a hefty slate of work. His first choice was a common one for former pro athletes: doing commentary for NBC Sports in various capacities. Pittsburgh affiliate WPXI-TV gave him “The Hines Ward Show,” a weekly potpourri of football analysis and interviews.
Honey Pig Korean BBQ Opens In Irvine

As Shuji reported a long while ago, Honey Pig, the Korean BBQ joint that specializes in samgyeopsal (pork belly), is coming to Irvine. It has finally opened. There are other Honey Pigs in LA’s Koreatown, in La Palma, and a Wako Honey Pig in Buena Park.
Some are related to the other by loose familial ties and they all have that specialty in common, as well as the domed cooking surface on which you sear and render your fatty pork slices into crispness.
